In December, Inspirado will be having 4 one-time-only shows of epic proportions, scale, and grandiloquence. We’re calling it…De-spirado…
It was a special night at Inspirado for the very first De-spirado of all time. Shawn Wickens entered the Inspirado arena alone to do battle with an army of 20+ improvisers. When the dust had settled, “everyone” walked away a winner. Including Shawn. And you!
Shawn elected to go first, and onto the stage came Everyone. Team Captain Kevin Cragg was joined by Elana Fishbein, Rachel Werbel, Woody Fu, Maggie Morris, Ruby Marez, Binu Paulose, Megan Gray, Kevin Kiernan, Andrew Fafoutakis, Michael Lutton, Sean Taylor, Tony Mui, Jon Bander, Jamaal Sedayao, Matt Shafeek, Vince Milosevich, Andrew Yurman-Glaser, Jason Scott Quinn, Ben Jones, Bianca Casusol, Jarret Berenstein, Austin Kuras–23 performers in all. They selected the physical challenge and recieved, Going Down: “You are all stuck in an elevator.”
The group quickly formed into a tight knit pack of people stuck in an elevator. An old woman (Elana Fishbein) got lifted to the front on her chair; a man (Austin Kuras) was bringing his elephant (Kevin Kiernan) somewhere. Jarret Berenstein, ex-con, was heading to see his parole officer. Andrew Yurman-Glaser selling girl scout cookies. At one point, Ruby Marex began knifing people and Jamaal Sedayao fired off his gun, startling NBA Center Chris Bosh. Jon Bander was convinced someone was the devil. Sean Taylor, it turned out 5 minutes into the show, was an elevator repair man. He was prompty stabbed. The dead bodies began accumulating, and eventually turned into zombies, devouring everyone but Jarret (clever) and Elana (old), who remarked, dementia-addled, “This park looks different.” And much, much more.
“Everyone” then took their seats in the crowd as Shawn Wickens took the stage, lonely but strong. He selected a Random challenge called Something/Anything. Shawn used to perform a show called “Something out of Anything”, a scripted show taking a small fact and building an entire show around it. His challenge was to improvise a something out of everything using the fact: Kevin Cragg has gray hair. Cragg joined him on stage and Shawn began the interview, asking Kevin about gray related topics like his hair, “The Grays” (aliens), depressin (Spaulding Grey), and an improvised scene from “Grey Gardens” with Shawn and Kevin as Little Edie and Big Edie. “You have so many suitors…”
When the votes were counted, it would be Everyone walking away with a tight victory. Shawn shouted, “We did it!” and joined in Everyone’s celebration. After all, everyone is everyone.
